This rubber seed pod or capsule is a visual reminder that the Bukit Gasing forest park was formerly
a rubber plantation more than 60 years ago that was allowed to regenerate naturally into a secondary forest.
This capsule was photographed from the massive concrete-and-steel suspension bridge on the Kuala Lumpur side of
the park near its entrance. During our trek through the park -- in early August, in the midst of a hot, dry spell in the weather --
we could hear the intermittent explosive sound ("braaack") of rubber seed capsules bursting to scatter the seeds inside them.
