NATURE UP CLOSE and PERSONAL ~ SPIDER GALLERY ~ LYCOSIDAE (WOLF SPIDERS)

Wolf Spiders (Lycosidae)

THESE ARE free-ranging spiders which hunt on the ground or close to the ground. But some species, such as the Lawn Wolf Spider, spin webs to trap prey. The females may be seen carrying a spherical egg-sac under their abdomen. This makes them quite conspicuous as the egg-sacs are of a light colour and quite big in comparison to their bodies. In fact, the first wolf spider that I photographed was a female with egg-sac.
