NATURE UP CLOSE and PERSONAL ~ SPIDER GALLERY ~ TETRAGNATHIDAE (BIG-JAWED SPIDERS)

Big-jawed Spiders (Tetragnathidae)

THESE SPIDERS weave delicate orb-webs to trap insect prey. Spiders of this family (known as Big-jawed Spiders or Long-jawed Orb-web Spiders) vary greatly in size, and so also their webs. Various species build their webs inclined at different angles to the perpendicular and at different levels under the forest canopy. Some Leucauge species build their webs close to the ground, while the webs of some Nephila species may be found hanging from the lowest branch of a tree of medium height.
