ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND PHOTOS: Most of the photos in this website were taken during a period of about 17 years from the early 1980s to late 1990s on 35mm colour slide film and digitised with a "home" scanner (i.e. not one in the "pro" category). The handful of exceptions are photos in JPEG file contributed by Mr Simon Chan and Mr Ng Tham Fatt to this site. My name is Chin Fah Shin. I'm a Chinese Malaysian living in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. I took up photography as a hobby when I was about 15, but it was not until much later in life, after acquiring the necessary equipment in 1982, that I began to shoot butterflies and other small creatures. From my home in Kuala Lumpur, I made forays into nearby forests and hills, often with by my daughter in tow or together with members of the Malaysian Nature Society, to indulge in nature close-up photography. All went well until I came down with a health condition (dermatomyositis), and one of the doctors who treated me advised against going out in the sun. So I have to stop chasing butterflies in the noon-day sun but I still take photos, mostly of my grandchidren and occasionally a creature that wanders into my suburban garden.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: Over the years, at one time or another, various people have helped me along in my pursuit of butterfly watching and nature watching in general. I would like to thank Dr Laurence Kirton for assistance rendered to me in various ways, especially in the identification of butterfly species that I have capture on 35mm colour slide film. I would also like to thank Dr Yong Hoi Sen for using my articles when he was editor of the magazine Nature Malaysiana. Many thanks also go to Simon Chan Kee Mun who has helped me with identification and also contributed writings and photos to this website. Simon wrote the the first article for the Butterfly Notebook section. He has followed this up with an article on the Rajah Brooke's Birdwing and a couple of poems. My thanks go also to Khew Sin Khoon and Mohd Fairus Jalil for identifying some of the species from the photos, which is always a risky or difficult task. Around the time (mid 1990s) that I first had my website up and running, Fairus had a website titled The Butterflies of Borneo, that carried many photos of beautiful species not found in Peninsular Malaysia. I also thank MNS members with whom I had gone out trekking for their comradeship.
